Mastering Letter Writing: Formal, Semi-Formal, and Informal Letters for Kids (Grade 3-5)

Learning the 3 Main Types of Letters!

Hi student! Do you want to learn how to write a letter that everyone understands? Letters are important messages we send to people. But did you know there are different ways to write a letter depending on who you are writing to? Let's explore the three main types: Formal, Semi-Formal, and Informal letters.

What are the Types of Letters?

Formal Letter (Serious Talk)

This is the most serious type of letter. You write a Formal Letter to people you don't know well or to important places like the Principal of your school, a government office, or a big company. The language must be very polite and professional.

Semi-Formal Letter (Polite Conversation)

This letter is friendly but still polite. You use it when writing to someone you know a little, like a teacher you work with often, the parent of your friend, or a volunteer leader. It’s a mix of professional language and a little bit of personal touch.

Informal Letter (Just Talking)

This is the easiest and friendliest letter! You write Informal Letters to people you know and love very well, like your Mom, Dad, best friend, or cousin. You can use casual language, slang, and contractions (like "I'm" instead of "I am").

Key Differences: Opening, Body, and Closing

The biggest difference is how you start and end your message. This table shows you exactly what to write for each part!
